65 million cups of tea are drunk in the UK every day - make them Fairtrade!

Over 20 million people in developing countries rely on the tea industry for their livelihoods. But it is small-scale farmers and workers who benefit the least from it. Many lead extremely hard lives, doing physically demanding work for low pay.

As UK consumers we have the power to tackle this injustice. The UK is the world's third biggest importer of tea - that makes us a powerful player in the global tea trade.

Traidcraft seeks to make trade work for everyone: by trading directly with producers, supporting people to trade out of poverty and campaigning for trade justice. Promoting Fairtrade is just one way of doing that.

Fairtrade is the only system that guarantees producers a minimum price for their tea, and gives an extra premium payment for investment in their community. It is also the only development-driven scheme that gives producers a real voice in how the system works.

Polly Aguti is a cotton farmer in Uganda. She supports her eight children on the money that she earns from growing cotton. Cotton is a very labour intensive crop - it takes at least five months to harvest and requires a lot of watering and weeding. Yet farmers here receive the equivalent of 36p for a kilogram of cotton.
